The RoadRelay 5 software
calibration accessible through the link below is in a zip file. Unzip the calibration
file and save it in whatever folder you prefer on your PC. Unlike reflashing the RoadRelay 4, the RoadRelay 5 reflash is NOT transmitted over J1939/J1708 datalinks and does NOT require the use of an INLINE adapter.
Reflashing is accomplished using either the RoadRelay 5 front panel USB port or the RoadRelay 5 rear panel 9-pin female D-Subminiature serial connector with the appropriate cable.
Installing the RoadRelay 5 firmware requires the use of the RoadRelay 5 Reflash Tool. The RoadRelay 5 Reflash Tool is part of the Cummins PowerSpec application.
The link to the PowerSpec Download page is here. Once PowerSpec is installed, launch the PowerSpec application.
The steps for installing the RoadRelay
5 software are listed below.
1. Make your connection to the USB front panel connector via Cummins USB cable P/N 4918419 (2 meter), PN 4918591 (5 meter), or equivalent.
2. From the PowerSpec Main Menu, select "RoadRelay".
3. Select the "Reflash RoadRelay 5" button. This launches the RoadRelay 5 Reflash Utility.
4. Verify Port selection is "USB".
5. Press the "Start" button. This launches the Windows Open Dialog box.
6. Find the RoadRelay 5 calibration file (*.bin) you downloaded, unzipped, and saved.
7. Press the "Open" button.
Erasing and reprogramming takes about 1.5 minutes.
Note to PC Non-Admin Users: Installation of USB device drivers requires PC administrator privileges. PC administrator privileges will be required to install the PowerSpec application as well as the RoadRelay 5 USB drivers once the RoadRelay 5 is connected to the PC via the USB cable.
Using the RoadRelay 5 Rear Panel 9-pin Female D-Subminiature serial connector:
1. Make your connection to the rear panel 9-pin female D-Subminiature connector via Cummins Serial cable P/N 4918418 (2 meter) or equivalent.
2. From the PowerSpec Main Menu, select "RoadRelay".
3. Select the "Reflash RoadRelay 5" button. This launches the RoadRelay 5 Reflash Utility.
4. Verify Port selection is "COM".
5. Press the "Start" button. This launches the Windows Open Dialog box.
6. Find the RoadRelay5 calibration file (*.cal) you downloaded, unzipped, and saved.
7. Press the "Open" button". Erasing and reprogramming takes about 5 minutes.
Communicating (read data, write adjustments) to a RoadRelay 5 or communicating (read data) from a engine ECM with PowerSpec 4.2.
Basically, there are three connection methods:
1. Vehicle's Service Port - Uses the INLINE 4,5, or 6 drivers (Cummins Inc, INLINE 4,5,6).
2. RoadRelay 5 Front Panel USB - Uses RoadRelay 5 drivers (Cummins Inc. RoadRelay 5).
3. RoadRelay 5 Rear Panel 9-pin female D-Subminiature serial port.
Using the Vehicle's Service Port (requires a datalink adapter INLINE 4,5, or 6)
If you use the 6 or 9 Pin Service Port, then reading/writing RoadRelay 5 data is no different than the RoadRelay 4.
Note: For the RoadRelay 5, it is highly recommended that you always connect the RoadRelay to the vehicle's J1939 datalink. In fact, it is required for all Cummins 2010 and newer products. A J1708-only connection should only be made when J1939 is not available.
Using a J1939 configuration or a dual J1939/J1708 configuration is the recommended connection. A J1708-only connection should only be made when J1939 is not available.
Using the RoadRelay 5's Front Panel USB Port (does NOT require a datalink adapter)
The RoadRelay 5 front panel USB port requires that you change your Datalink Communication Connection method in PowerSpec:
a. Select the "Options" menu.
b. Select "Configuration Options..." menu item.
c. Select the "Configure Manually" radial button.
d. Using the Drop Down Menu, change the Datalink Adapter to "Cummins Inc. , RoadRelay 5".
e. Using the Drop Down Menu, change the Device List to "RoadRelay, USB".
f. Using the Drop Down Menu, change the Datalink Protocol to "J1939" or "J1708".
Now you are ready to communicate with the RoadRelay 5 or engine ECM.
Note that the "Datalink Protocol" selection does not matter when you are reading data from or writing data to the RoadRelay 5. You are not using J1939 or J1708 - you're connected directly to the RoadRelay 5 device itself! (This communication is handled internally in the RoadRelay 5). On the other hand, if you wanted to use this USB connection to communicate with other devices on the vehicle (engine ECM, brake controller, transmission, etc.), then this setting does matter. Both the RR5 datalink harness and the device you are attempting to communicate with must be attached to the same datalink on the vehicle. For example, suppose you want to use PowerSpec and communicate via J1939 to the engine ECM using the RR5 front panel USB connector. You complete steps a. through f. above, using J1939 as your Datalink Protocol. However, if the RoadRelay 5 is only connected to J1708, then this configuration will not work. In this scenario, you must change the PowerSpec Datalink Protocol to J1708.
Using the RoadRelay 5's rear panel 9-pin female D-Subminiature serial port (does NOT require a datalink adapter)
The RoadRelay 5 rear panel 9-pin female D-Subminiature serial port requires that you change your Datalink Communication Connection method in PowerSpec:
a. Select the "Options" menu.
b. Select "Configuration Options..." menu item.
c. Select the "Configure Manually" radial button.
d. Using the Drop Down Menu, change the Datalink Adapter to "Cummins Inc. , RoadRelay 5".
e. Using the Drop Down Menu, change the Device List to "RoadRelay, Com 1".
(This communication is handled internally to the RoadRelay 5). On the other hand, if you wanted to use this serial port connection to communicate with other devices on the vehicle (engine ECM, brake controller, transmission, etc.), then this setting does matter. Both the RoadRelay 5 datalink harness and the device you are attempting to communicate with must be attached to the same datalink on the vehicle (same example above applies).
Additional Notes:
1. Uninstalling PowerSpec will also uninstall the RoadRelay 5 drivers, making the virtual INLINE adapter inside the RoadRelay 5 useless. Keep this in mind if you uninstall PowerSpec.
2. There is no datalink "Auto detection" when you use the RoadRelay 5 drivers. Using the virtual INLINE adapter requires that you switch PowerSpec to "Configure Manually" (step c. above).
